List of Entrance Examinations after Class 12
Std. XII or Higher Secondary Certificate Examination as they refer to it in India is a crucial stage in a student’s career. The student is at crossroads with each career having a different route to travel. Many career streams open up for the student. Here are some of them.
Std. XII marks the final year of the student in school. Some areas like Mumbai refer to Std. XI and XII as Junior College. However, after completing Std. XII, the student can pursue various courses depending on his/her aptitude.
Which course to pursue?
Every student who has taken science subjects in his/her HSC level dreams of becoming either a doctor or an engineer. A lot depends on the marks they secure in their HSC. Similarly, a student who has studies commerce subjects proceeds to complete his/her Bachelor’s degree in Commerce with an ambition to become either a chartered/cost accountant or a company secretary. Students with a background in humanities usually go for the Bachelor of Arts, social sciences, and even law degrees. Many of these courses, especially the engineering and medical field ones have entrance examinations that students have to clear in addition to their HSC qualifications. There is a separate merit list based on which the students get admission in the stream they wish to take.
We shall look at some of the prominent entrance examinations that students can appear for after their Std. XII.
Engineering Entrance Examinations
Engineering is the most common field that science students aspire to study after their Std. XII. The primary eligibility criterion is that the student should have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in Std XII. They also refer to it as PCM. The marks obtained by the students in PCM gain importance when they appear for the engineering entrance examinations.
Usually, students like to pursue their higher education in the state they reside in. There are thousands of engineering colleges in India. Most of the colleges have affiliations with the respective state universities. Such state universities do not have entrance examinations for students completing Std XII from their state. However, private engineering universities like SRM, BITS, Manipal, and others have their entrance examinations.
JEE Main – Joint Entrance Examination (Main)
The JEE Main decides the admission to engineering courses at the NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions. Students wanting to secure admission in the IITs also have to appear for the JEE Main. Based on the marks achieved by the students in the JEE Main, they become eligible for the JEE Advanced examinations.
JEE Advanced – Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced)
Students have to qualify for the JEE Advanced by obtaining the qualifying marks in the JEE Main exam. This examination decides their admission to the IITs. On securing the qualifying marks, all the eligible students get admission into the 16 IITs situated all over India and ISM, Dhanbad. The focus of the JEE Advanced exam is on the PCM subjects.
BITSAT – Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test
‘BITS’ has its campuses in Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad. Students who are completing their Std. XII exams are eligible to appear for this entrance examination. BITSAT is a computer-based online exam that enables students to get admission in streams like Engineering, Information Systems, Pharmacy, and other courses conducted by BITS.
These are the most common engineering entrance examinations. Some of the other entrance examinations are as follows.
- VITEEE – Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examinations (Tamil Nadu)
- SRMJEEE – SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination (A deemed university in Tamil Nadu)
- AEEE - Amrita Engineering Entrance Examination (A deemed university in Tamil Nadu)
Similarly, you have universities in each state conducting their entrance examinations. Some of them are Manipal MU OET, and COMED-K in Karnataka, EAMCET in Andhra Pradesh, EAMCET in Telangana, and so on.
Medical Entrance Examinations
Students studying Physics, Chemistry, and Biology instead of Mathematics in Std. XII can opt for the medical stream. Similar to the engineering entrance examinations, you have medical entrance examinations that help you get admission in medical and dental colleges.
NEET – National Eligibility cum Entrance Exam Tests (Under Graduate)
The NEET-UG is an all-India level medical entrance examination conducted by CBSE. Based on the qualifying marks, students get admission in the state-level medical universities.
AIIMS MBBS – MBBS entrance exam for AIIMS
The All India Inst of Medical Sciences has their entrance examinations at the National to enable students to get admission in MBBS seats in AIIMS New Delhi and six other new AIIMS-like institutions in India.
JIPMER MBBS Entrance Test
The Jawaharlal Inst of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research conducts common entrance examinations to enable students to pursue MBBS degrees in its institute situated at Puducheri.
Similarly, you have various other entrance examinations for allied courses such as AIPVT for Veterinary Science, IGNOU Nursing, and Indian Army BSc Nursing and so on.
Defence and Marine Sector Competitive Exams
NDA ExaminationThe National Defence Academy at Khadakvasla has an entrance examination for students who wish to serve the Indian Armed Forces. The minimum qualification is a pass in the Std. XII examination. On clearing this exam, the cadets can join the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force depending on the marks they secure.
Indian Maritime University CETStudents from all over India can appear for a common entrance test that allows them to complete the Diploma in Nautical Science. They can also go ahead and finish the BSc in Nautical Science.
Apart from these two popular entrance examinations, you have the Indian Navy B.Tech entrance exam, Sailors recruitment, and Indian Army Technical Entry Scheme.
Law Entrance Examinations
CLAT – Common Law Admission Test
India has 14 National Law Universities that offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in law. One university out of the 14 has the responsibility to conduct a common test where students from all over India can appear. Successful candidates will get admission in these 14 law colleges based on the marks they secure.
Apart from CLAT, students can also spear for the All India Law Entrance Test to pursue BA, LLB (Hons), and the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) for selective law colleges like Amity, ITM Gurgaon, and so on. You have more law entrance exams like the SET (Symbiosis), and BHU Law Entrance Exam.
Hotel Management Courses
NCHMCT JEEStudents wishing to pursue hospitality-related courses can appear for the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology JEE. You can get admission in courses like BSc Hospitality and Hotel Administration courses.
Other Important Entrance Exams
- NIFT Entrance Test –National Institute of Fashion Technology for fashion technology-related courses.
- NID - National Institute of Design.
- AIEED – All India Entrance Exam for Design.
- SSC CHSL Exam – Students can give this exam and join the Government departments like Railways, Armed Forces, various ministries, and other departments as lower division clerks.
- CPT for CA – Common Proficiency Test for Chartered Accountancy conducted by Council of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
- ICAR AIEEA-UG – Students interested in pursuing agricultural research can appear for this test.
