IES Exam Pattern 2020 - UPSC releases the IES exam pattern in the official notification. The IES exam is conducted in 3 phases - Prelims, Mains and Interview. According to IES exam pattern, the examination is conducted in offline mode. In IES prelims exam, there are two papers one is common to all and other is engineering paper. In Mains exam, there are two papers for engineering discipline of candidate’s choice.

IES Exam Pattern 2020

IES exam is conducted in 3 phases, similar to the UPSC civil services exam. Earlier there were only two phases. With the introduction of a new pattern in engineering services exam, there are 3 phases - Prelims, Mains and Interview.

IES Exam Pattern for Prelims exam

IES Prelims exam is an objective test (Multiple Choice Questions) is a screening test to shortlist candidates for the mains exam.

UPSC conducts the IES prelims exam offline mode in various exam centres across India. In engineering services prelims exam, there will be two papers:

  • Paper 1 - General Studies and Engineering Aptitude 
  • Paper 2 - Engineering Discipline (Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Civil)

There will penalty for wrong answers, one-third marks is deducted for every wrong answer. Candidates need to mark the correct answers in the OMR sheet provided by UPSC.

IES Exam Pattern for Mains exam

Candidates who qualified prelims exam are eligible for the IES mains exam. IES mains exam is descriptive in nature. Candidates need to write answers for the questions asked by UPSC.

In IES mains exam, there will two papers from the engineering discipline of candidates choice. Total four engineering stream question papers are there in engineering services exam - Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering. 

Candidates need to write the answer in English Medium only. There will deduction of 5% of marks for illegible handwriting.

IES Exam Pattern for Interview

IES interview is the final stage of engineering services exam. Candidates those who qualified IES mains exam will be eligible for the interview phase. In the interview, UPSC asses the overall personality traits of the candidates. For IES interview the maximum marks are 200.

IES Exam Day Instructions

IES Prelims exam is scheduled on 5-January-2020. Candidates should follow the below mentioned instructions on the day of the exam.

  • Read the instructions and guidelines provided in the question paper before start attempting questions
  • Use black ball pen to mark the answers on the OMR sheet
  • Candidates are not allowes to bring electronic gadgets inside the examination hall like Mobile phone, electronic watch, calculator and other electronic devices.
  • Avoid malpractices and inappropriate behaviour inside the examination hall. It may lead to cancellation of candidature.
  • Candidates are not allowed to leave exam hall before the prescribed finishing time of the exam.

Q. How many stages are there in IES exam?

A. In IES exam, there are three stages - Stage 1 - Prelims exam, Stage 2 - Mains exam and Stage 3 - Interview.

Q. What is the marking scheme followed by UPSC in IES exam?

A. In IES Prelims exam, there are two papers, Paper 1 contains 200 marks and paper 2 for 300 marks. In IES mains exam, there are two engineering papers each 300 marks.

Q. Is there any negative marking in IES exam?

A. Yes, in IES prelims exam there is negative marking. For every wrong answers one-third marks will be deducted.
