IES Eligibility Criteria 2020 - UPSC conducts engineering services exam to recruit candidates for various central government departments. The minimum educational eligibility to apply for the IES exam is an engineering degree. The age limit eligibility is 21 years lower limit and 30-year upper limit. 

Note: The notification for IES exam released on 25th September 2019. Candidates can start filling their IES Application Forms.

IES Exam Eligibility - Educational Qualification

The minimum educational qualification to appear for IES exam 2020 is a degree in the engineering discipline from the recognised university. 

Here is the detailed list of educational criteria provided by UPSC for appearing IES exam 2020:
  1. Candidates must have attained an engineering degree from the recognised university that are incorporated by the Central Government, State Government or UGC Act.  or 
  2. Candidates should have passed section A and B of Institution examination conducted by  Institution of Engineers (India) or
  3. Candidates should have obtained engineering degree or diploma course from foreign universities and those degrees are recognised by the Government of India or
  4. Candidates qualified Graduate Membership exam of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India)  or 
  5. Candidate Parts II and III or Section A and B of Associate Membership Examination conducted by Aeronautical Society of India or
  6. Candidate passed Graduate Membership Exam of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after  November 1959 
Note 1: Provided that a candidate for the post of Indian  Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts) and Indian Radio  Regulatory Service Group ‘A’ may possess any of the above qualifications or the qualification mentioned below namely:‐  

Note 2: For Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engg. Posts) ‐ M.Sc. degree or it is equivalent with Wireless Communication  Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.  

Note 3: For Indian Radio Regulatory Service Group ‘A’– M.Sc. degree or it's equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics,  Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a subject or Master’s Science with Physics and Radio Communication or Electronics or Telecommunication as a special subject. 

IES Exam Eligibility - Age Criteria

UPSC has set the age limit to apply for the engineering services exam. The minimum age criteria to apply for the IES exam is 21 years and the maximum (upper age limit) is 30 years. The age limit criteria for IAS 2020 exam is that candidates must not be born earlier than 02nd January 1990 and not later than 01st January 1999.

Some relaxations have been given to candidates belonging to certain reserved categories as mentioned below:

  • It should be noted that the candidates must not be less than 21 years and not more than 30 years. The upper age or maximum age limit will be relaxed to 35 years for the government servants.
  • This relaxation in IES age limit will not be admissible to the probationer appointed against the permanent post in the office during his/her probation period.
  • The upper age limit relaxed for up to 5 years for the candidates who belong to SC/ ST and for up to 3 years for the aspirants belonging to the OBC category.
  • ECOs/ SSCOs who have finished an initial period of assignment of five years of military services on 1 August 2019 get 5 years relaxation.
  • The upper age limit will be relaxed for up to three years in the case of defense services personnel who get disabled during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area.
  • All candidates must provide proof in order to enjoying the benefit of age limit relaxation by submitting the valid documents.

IES Exam Eligibility - Nationality

For Engineering services exam conducted by UPSC, the candidate must be a citizen of India.

A candidate must be either: 

(a) a citizen of India, or 

(b) a subject of Nepal, or 

(c) a subject of Bhutan, or 

(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or 

(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently setting in India. 

Note 1: Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India. 

Note 2: A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him/her by the Government of India.

Medical Examinations

  • The candidates need to undergo medical examination regardless of the fact that he or she has appeared for such examination in the past.
  • This medical examination will be conducted in any of the railway hospitals under the Ministry of Railways. The final decision regarding candidate's fitness will be taken by the Railway Medical Board and shall be considered as final.

IES Exam Eligibility Criteria - FAQs

Q. What is the age limit for IES Exam? 

A. The upper age limit for IES exam is 30 years. But UPSC has provided some relaxation to OBC, SC, ST and PH categories.


Q. How many attempts are there for the UPSC IES Exam? 

A. In engineering services exam, UPSC has not restricted any number of attempts. Candidates can appear for the exam till their upper age limit.

Q. What is the minimum percentage of marks required in graduation to apply for IES Exam? 

A. There is no minimum percentage of marks set by UPSC. Candidates should hold a valid degree on engineering from a recognised university. 

Q. Can 10th / 12th pass candidates appear for IES exam? 

A. No. 10th / 12 pass is not the minimum qualification for IAS exam. The minimum qualification is an engineering degree.
