14-Feb-2018 - Question 2
Give description of ''culture failure theory'' with respect to the decline of the Mughal empire. (10 Marks, 150 words)
There are 2 streams of views regarding the decline of the Mughals - one is the Empire centric views and other is Region centric views. Under the Empire centric view, there are 2 schools of historiography - one favours the Personality centric view whereas the other favours the Socio-economic-cultural-administrative centric view. One view from the later is the cultural failure theory.
The Cultural failure theory is one aspect of the entire historiography of the decline of Mughals presented by historian Athar Ali.
According to this theory, the cultural failure of rulers of India in imbibing western knowledge and learning was responsible for the decline of the Mughals. The technological backwardness of the Indians in various fields like agricultural production, craft production, seafaring activities (Mughals did not have control over high seas), military fields etc led to the decline of the Mughals.
