India was an under-developed country in the pre-independence period. After independence, various developmental projects were stared to fulfill the growing demands of people of the country with an aim to make India a developed country. The developmental projects have a negative impact on the environment and country faced several environmental problems like shrinkage of forest area, loss of surface water, degradation of land, contamination of underground water etc. various movements like Chipko movement, Narmada Bachao Andolan, Tarun Bharat Sangh etc. were launched by the community, non-government organizations, and environmental conservation groups.
The environmental movements favor the sustainable management of natural resources. The movements often stress the protection of the environment via changes in public policy. Many movements are centered on ecology, health and human rights. Environmental movements range from the highly organized and formally institutionalized ones to the radically informal activities.
Movements like Chipko, Appiko and silent valley project were oriented to save the natural forest, wildlife and local livelihood which dependent over the forest. Movements like Tarun Bharat Sangh were oriented to conserve the surface water through various means including plantation of the trees. Movements like Narmada Bachao Andolan were oriented to save the land from submergence and to protect the affected people from the migration.
The spatial scope of various environmental movements ranges from being local to the almost global.
