Model Answer

The Battle of Plassey was fought on 23 June 1757 between the Armies of Nawab of Bengal (Sirajuddaual) and East India Company. The war was not important from the military point of view as Nawab’s Army Chief had betrayed him due to which company won the battle easily. It was more a diplomatic win rather than military one. But, the Battle of Plassey opened the door of political supremacy of British in India which was confirmed by the events following the battle.

After the battle Mir Jaffer become the Nawab of Bengal, he was dependent upon the British bayonets for the maintenance for maintenance of his position and for protection against foreign invasions. For this purpose, an army of 6000 English troops has been maintained in Bengal.

Gradually, the real power in Bengal was being exercised by Company and they started to interfere in day to day business of government. The company even removed Mir Jaffer as Nawab after he failed to fulfill their vested interest.

East India Company got a huge amount of money after the Battle of Plassey in the name of war compensation, the preferential trade tariffs provided to the company also made them prosperous. The vast resources of Bengal helped the British to conquer the wars of Deccan and extend their influence over Northern India.

The war had an important moral effect, as a commercial company had defeated the ruler of a strong province. It raised the reputation of the company weakness of Indian political system had been exposed.

The Army of the British East India Company was well organised and was equipped with modern arms and ammunition which defeated a combined army of Mir Qasim, Nawab of Awadh Shuzauddaula and Mughal Emperor Shah Alam in the Battle of Buxar in 1964. By the treaty of Allahabad, Company got the right of revenue collection Bengal and after few years they established direct rule in Bengal. The British rule started from India soon expanded to large part of the country which lasted almost 200 years. Thus we can say the Battle of Plassey had opened the door of political supremacy for East India Company in India.
