Model Answer

Mental maps refers to the images of places mentally stored by individuals and drawn upon as resources  in their interpretation of spatial desirability, their organisation of spatial routines and their decision-making transaction as satisficing agents.

They have grown as a part of the behavioural criticism to the quantitative revolution. They have also been termed as cognitive or subjective environments.

The fundamental characteristics of mental maps are:

  1. People have a particular image of the environment.
  2. The image is unique for each individual.
  3. There is a correlation between this image and the behaviour.

For example, a herder and a farmer living in the same location will have very different images of the location based on their perception of its value to their economic activity.

Gould has stated that if spatial behaviour is the concern then mental images that men hold of the space around them provide the key to some of the structures, patterns and processes of man’s work on the face of the earth. They also help in planning of the social investment.
