GATE Exam Pattern

GATE examination is held in the designated centres around the country over an online portal. Candidates will be given 3 hours to complete a paper of 100 marks. Some of the major papers are held over multiple sessions too. The table below explains the basic exam pattern of GATE:

FeatureDescription
Exam Duration3 hours (180 minutes)
Number of Questions Asked65
Total Marks100
Question TypesTwo types of questions asked: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions
Marking Scheme For 1-mark MCQs, 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer For 2-marks MCQs, every wrong attempt will cost 2/3 mark There is no deduction for the question not attempted There is no negative marking for numerical answer type (NAT) questions.
Sections General Aptitude* Engineering Mathematics (for XL papers it is Chemistry)* Core subject matter

The candidates have to answer using the mouse and selecting the right answer in MCQ and putting in the right value in case of numerical questions using the virtual keyboard. The physical keyboard will be disabled. The screen will automatically shut down after three hours are over.

The candidates will be allotted a notepad to do rough work and calculations. Any candidate caught carrying anything other than a pen, admit card and identity card will be disqualified, and even barred in case they are caught using them during the examinations.
