Model Answer

Shyam Charan Dube is a noted Indian sociologist who conducted researches on indian village societies as well tribal societies. The prominent contributions are as follows.

He chaired a committee on tribal development setup by ministry of education and social welfare in 1972 which recommended TSP strategy for tribal development. It was soon adopted in fifth five year plan. He pointed out that government needs to define problems of tribals at national level.

He conducted field researches in Chhattisgarh, Telangana and  Odisha on his theoretical interests of social structure and change. He studied the Kamars of Madhya Pradesh and presented a monograph on them 'THE KAMARS’ 1951. He compiled his study on village shamirpet in his book 'THE VILLAGE’ 1955. he conducted first village  study in India as Robert redfield did so in Mexico in 1930. He noted that economic system of a village is formed on the basis of caste based work specialisation, interdependence and occupational mobility.

He gave the concept of 'dominant individuals’ in criticism to MS Srinivasan’s concept of dominant caste.

He criticised that analysis of Indian culture with the help of great and little traditions (GT-LT) would be insufficient because  traditions in India are organised not in a bipolar but multipolar  system. He opined that GT-LT frame of reference  does not allow proper scope for the consideration of role and significance of regional, western, and emergent National traditions, each of which is powerful in its own way. Hence, proposed six fold of classification to truly represent the Indian culture.

He gave five fold  classification of tribes w.r.t cultural contacts (1960). i) aboriginals living in seclusion. ii) tribal groups with some village folk association. iii) tribals living in mixed villages. iv) tribal forced to live as untouchables. v) tribals enjoying a high social status.

Lastly, SC Dube also touched upon the concepts like world view, intercaste attitudes, intergroup relations and sanskritization. Other book works of SC dube includes ‘India's Changing Villages’, ‘Indian society’, ‘Contemporary India And Its Modernization’ etc.
